THE Secretary, Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ, South South, Comrade Eunice Emeyazia has appealed to Nigerians having serious heart related issues not to watch the live transmission of the final match of the African Cup of Nations, scheduled for Sunday.
Comrade Emeyazia made the appeal while speaking to newsmen in Asaba, the Delta State capital, Nigeria.
She lamented the incidents of sudden deaths reported across the country of some ardent football fans during the semi-final match between Nigeria and Bafana Bafana of South Africa on Wednesday.
“It has become pertinent for those suffering from high blood pressure and heart related ailments to avoid anything that could trigger attack on their health to avoid watching”.
The journalist called on family and friends to monitor their loved ones during the match, while also urging all football fans watching the match to make conscious effort to stay calm throughout the match to avoid a trigger leading to health complications.
Recall that an All Progressives Congress, APC chieftain, Dr Cairo Ojougboh, a Youth Corper serving in Kaduna and a notable Nigerian businessman operating in Cote D’Ivoire, the Deputy Bursar of a University in Kwara State, among others, reportedly died while watching the match.
….. Super Eagles goalkeeper receives threat
Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, who plays for Chippa United in South Africa, has reportedly received threats from South African fans following his outstanding performance against the country.
The South African fans reportedly warned him against returning to his club after the AFCON.
Former Super Eagles international Idah Peterside who disclosed this while speaking on Channels Television Thursday, stated that some fans have warned Nwabali not to go back to Chippa United in South Africa after the AFCON tournament.
…Cote d’Ivoire, the AFCON 2024 host, have booked their place in the final with a 1-0 win over DR Congo.
Sébastien Haller scored the goal that took the Elephants into Sunday’s final against Nigeria.
Cote d’Ivoire and Nigeria met in the group stage, where the Super Eagles won 1-0, courtesy of a penalty from William Troost-Ekong.
The host country’s path to the final was turbulent. It performed poorly in it’s group matches, defeated by Nigeria 1-O and humiliated by Equitorial Guinea 4-0.
It only sneaked through to the Round of 16 as one the four best losers who progressed. That was courtesy of it’s 2-0 defeat of Guinea Bissau on 13 January, the first day of the competition.
