Nigeria’s President, Senator Bola Tinubu through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Chief Ajuri Ngelale said as a former leader of the opposition in Nigeria that he specially noted the determination and courage the incoming Prime Minister of the UK demonstrated throughout his years in the opposition and as the leader of the Labour Party.
The President stated that the Party’s ability to reform, mobilise and position itself for victory after 14 years clearly affirms the leadership qualities of Starmer.
According to a statement signed by Ngelale, “President Tinubu also congratulates the citizens and the government of the United Kingdom, describing the Kingdom as an abiding model of democracy and Nigeria’s long-standing partner.
“The President looks forward to deepening relations between Nigeria and the United Kingdom in mutual areas of interest and in strengthening democratic institutions, as well as in building a safer and more prosperous future for the people of both countries,” the statement added.
…..Prime Minister resigns
Following the landslide victory of Labour Party in the UK general election, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has resigned as leader of the Conservative Party.
In a historic political revolution, the opposition Labour Party won the British election, ending 14 years of rule by the Conservative Party.
While accepting responsibility for the defeat Sunak said, “I would like to say, first and foremost, I am sorry. I have given this job my all,” he said on the steps of 10 Downing Street. But you have sent a clear signal that the government of the United Kingdom must change.
“And yours is the only judgment that matters. I have heard your anger, your disappointment and I take responsibility for this loss.
“I am honoured to have been your Prime Minister, this is the best country in the world.”
On his part, Labour leader, Keir Starmer, who is the incoming Prime Minister said, “You have changed Britain. A weight has been lifted, a burden finally removed from the shoulders of this great nation and now we can look forward again”.
