THE Nigeria Association of Women Journalists NAWOJ has called on governments in the South South region to focus attention in providing quality healthcare for citizens.

Zonal Vice Chairperson, South South, Comrade Stella Macaulay and the Zonal Secretary, Comrade Eunice Emeyazia in a statement made available to Townhall lamented ravaging sicknesses and diseases threatening the life of citizens as a result of hunger, psychological distress and poor health infrastructure and policies.

The statement said, “the burning of fossil fuels and other such activities were already polluting the fresh air and water and aquatic life increasing the rate of sicknesses and diseases and called on government to brace up to its responsibility of providing essential health services and making it affordable and accessible for citizens as well.

They said as the World marked the World Health Day 2024, with the theme, “My Health My right”, government at all levels should reflect soberly on how they have upheld the right to health of citizens especially in executing projects and policies, and seek out ways to improve, bearing in mind that the wealth of a nation is also measured by the overall health of its people.

World Health Day is observed annually on April 7, to raise awareness about global health issues and highlight the importance of well-being.
