Men of the Delta State Police command are presently interrogating a 28-year-old woman for allegedly stealing a two-week-old baby from her neighbour in Sapele, Delta State.
The Town Hall gathered that the crime was committed at the Ojolu area of the town.
According to report the nursing mother had stepped out of her home to buy soap leaving the baby behind.
Alarmed by the sudden disappearance upon her coming back, she raised alarm that attracted a large crowd.
A search party was organized while the matter was subsequently reported at the Sapele Police station.
As luck would have it after a week of searching someone gave a tip off which led the search party to move their search light towards the Uruakpa end of the town where the missing baby was eventually found.
The matter took another dimension when the suspect (name withheld) claimed ownership of the baby.
She went to the extent of calling a midwife as a witness, claiming that the midwife was the one who delivered her of the baby.
But after serious interrogation and threatening she bowed to pressure and finally confessed to stealing the baby.
At the time of this report it was not ascertained if the said fake midwife who stood in as one who delivered the baby was also in custody.
