The need for all Ukwuani people both at home and in diaspora to showcase their identity and preserve such from extinction has been brought to the fore.
A foremost community leader in Ukwuani Local Government Area of Delta State, Ogbuefi John Okpu gave the advice during the 2023 Ukwuani Day Celebration, held in Sapele.
Ogbuefi Okpu , who hails from Umuebu, said that preservation of the traditions and culture of the people was very important for the benefits of the younger generation.
He said that the Ukwuani Cultural Day Celebration was a day set aside for the people of Ukwuani from the three Local Government Areas, namely Ndokwa West, Ndokwa East and Ukwuani to celebrate their rich cultural heritage.
In their separate remarks, some indigenes of Ukwuani, who spoke including Chief Friday Daddy Amudo, the pioneer President Of Ukwuani People residing in Sapele, Mrs. Mary Obodo, Mrs. Olukwu Kate and Mrs. Joy Ogana enjoined parents to always teach their children their language.
They urged Ukwuani people to be proud of their culture, adding that Ukwuani people were peace loving people anywhere they found themselves.They however, noted that the day provided them the opportunity to tell the whole world that they were one indivisible entity and called on other indigenes of the tribe to embrace their culture.
According to them, their strength depended largely on their unity and togetherness and wondered why parents are no longer encouraging their children to embrace their culture and traditions.
