As Ward-to-Ward National Identity Number (NIN) registration exercise begins across the 25 local government areas of Delta State, today (Monday, February 16), some residents have expressed worry over naferious activities of some officials through extortion.
A report filed by Endurance Ikanone, of the State Ministry of Information, said, “Residents of Sapele, Delta State have called The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) and other relevant government authorities to closely monitor their officials and decisively check any form of corruption as the Commission commences its Ward-to-Ward NIN registration exercise, citing past experiences of alleged extortion during similar exercises.
“Speaking to newsmen, Osahon Edema, stated that this Ward-to-Ward exercise is a welcome development but it must be free as promised.
“In the past”, the report went on, “people were asked to pay before they could be registered.
“We want NIMC to strictly monitor their officials and provide phone numbers where any misconduct can be reported”, he stated.

Meantime, the Director-General of the Delta State Bureau for Orientation and Communications, Dr. Fred Latimore Oghenesivbe, in a press statement, weekend, strongly encouraged residents aged zero and above who are yet to register, to take advantage of the opportunity.
Oghenesivbe emphasized the importance of enrolling all citizens and residents in the NIMC National Identity Number programme, noting that the NIN has become a mandatory requirement for accessing banking and telecommunications services, participating in government empowerment programmes, processing travel documents, and conducting various official and financial transactions.
He assured residents that registration centres would be located at designated Town Halls in every ward across Delta State to ensure ease of access and convenience.
The registration exercise will run from (today) February 16 to March 30, 2026, and will take place daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
