A pro-democracy movement, Delta Unity Network has accused the Delta State chapter of the All Progressive Congress (APC) of planning to incite violent protests across Delta State by hiring thugs starting August 1, 2024.
The group in a statement in Asaba weekend signed by its Chairman/Convener, Dr. Kingsley Etaghene and Secretary, Hon. Douglas Nwanne alleged that the opposition party – APC would be camouflaging under the guise of the planned nationwide protests over economic hardship to promote its own sinister agenda.
The statement reads:
“Delta Unity Network stands against any ill-conceived protest. No political group or individual in Delta should be allowed to incite the people to participate in selfish protests. The prevailing peace in the state under Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s administration cannot be disrupted overnight by a few reactionary forces.
“Those who lost in the 2023 state governorship elections can continue to mourn their defeat, but not at the expense of the lives and destinies of susceptible Deltans. The people cannot be deceived.
“Bitter detractors planning to recruit hooligans to unleash social unrest in the state over alleged economic difficulties are mere hypocrites. There is no bad governance in Delta. They should direct their thoughtless aggression and frustration elsewhere. The Oborevwori administration is not responsible for the nationwide socio-economic distress Nigerians are facing.
“On the contrary, Governor Oborevwori has brought joy and fulfillment to the majority of Deltans. With appreciable infrastructure development and various empowerment programs aimed at poverty alleviation and wealth creation, Delta is working and making progress. The implementation of the governor’s laudable M.O.R.E Agenda is excellently on course.
“We join well-meaning Deltans to say no to protests inimical to the peace and development of our dear state”, according to the statement.
Efforts to reach the Delta APC leadership for reaction were unsuccessful as at the time of filing in this report.
