DELTA State Governor, Rt. Hon Sheriff Oborevwori has demoted his Executive Assistant (EA) on Sports following the dethroning of Delta State as the defending champion at the just concluded National Youth Games (NYG) in Asaba, right on their very soil.
Peeved by the displacement of Delta to the second position, the governor was said to have summoned an emergency meeting shortly after the closing ceremony to establish the factors behind the State’s failure to maintain its traditional position as the best State in the last eight editions of the Games.
At that meeting he was reported to have tongue lashed the State’s Sports Commission headed by his brother, Onoriode Oborevwori and the Local Organising Committee (LOC).
The governor fuming with anger and utter disappointment was not at all, persuaded by the spirited efforts to convince him through explanations and excuses put forward as defence.
And guess what, the immediate past Director-General of the Sports Commission, presently his Executive Assistant on Sports, Mr Festus Owhojero was immediately demoted for not living up to expectations.
Beside that, the governor was said to have ended the emergency meeting by directing the officials of the State Sports Commission and the LOC to urgently prepare detailed report on the Games, submit same to his office in order to let him know exactly what happened.
Recall that The Townhall had reported that the former Editor of The Pointer newspapers, currently the Publisher of a prominent Online platform – The Pond News, Julius Oweh while commenting on the outcome of the Games stated that “Incompetent management, lack of proper planning and preparation are the fertile ground for this disgrace.
“This is the first time the Delta Sports Commission under the leadership of Mr Onoriode Oborevwori (Governor’s brother) is hosting a major sports competition”.
Lagos State, for the first time, emerged the overall winners of the National Youth Games by hauling a total of 110 Medals comprising 52 Gold, 32 Silver and 26 Bronze while the defending champion Delta State finished second with 114 medals – 37 Gold, 38 Silver and 39 Bronze.
