NYG backlash: Demoting an Aide is selective, sack your junior brother heading Sports Commission for equity sake, Critics slam Gov Oborevwori

By Austin Ogwuda

Mounting criticisms are trailing the swift demotion of the Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s Executive Assistant on Sports, Festus Owhojero following the dethroning of Delta State as defending champion by Lagos State at the just concluded National Youth Games in Asaba.

The Internet is already awash with series of uncomplimentary comments surrounding what some of them described as “partiality”.

According to report by Emerald News, one Sports Analyst said, “This looks less like accountability and more like selective punishment. If the governor wants to enforce performance standards, then sparing the Commission leadership weakens that message”.

As part of broader measures to ensure successful hosting of the 9th edition of the National Youth Games Delta State Sports Commission constituted 8-man Local Organizing Committee (LOC).

The Commission’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Mrs Franca Okonma had in a press statement released before the tournament boasted that Delta State was going to retain its championship position.

The statement went further to announce that because of the crucial nature of the assignment that the LOC would be chaired by the Chairman of the State Sports Commission, Mr. Onoriode Oborevwori (Governor’s junior brother) with former Commissioner for Sports, Chief Solomon Ogba as Adviser.

The statement added that ”Delta Sports Commission reaffirms its commitment to staging an event that will showcase Delta’s proven capacity for sports excellence and its leadership in grassroots talent development”.
