Medical feat: Hope rising as Private Hospital in Delta carries out its first kidney transplant successfully

By our Reporter

A privately-owned, Mount Horeb Clinic and Dialysis Centre in Warri, Delta State, South-South, Nigeria, has successfully carried out its first kidney transplant.

The operation was carried out on a 31-year-old patient (names withheld) suffering from renal disease on the 6th of this month (September) with the donor being a perfect match and no complications reported.

The transplant performed by a team of Surgeons and Nephrologists comprising Dr. Raph Onyemekeihia, Dr. Henry Slater, Dr. Edema Great, Dr. Akporaye Akpomiemie, Nephrolosy Nurse, Mrs Vero Ebinum and the Transplant Co-ordinator, Dr. Jimoh Abdulmalik.

The team led by Dr. Raphael Onyemekeihia has therefore called on the Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and other spirited individuals for support to ensure Deltans no longer travel far distance to get such medical attention.

He told newsmen in Warri that “Patients used to travel to Lagos, Abuja, India, or the UK for kidney transplants, which involved significant financial and logistical challenges, but now it is around us.

“To prepare, the group studied transplant procedures at several centers in India, Egypt, and Nigerian hospitals, and since 2018, they have gathered all necessary equipment, including a fully equipped ICU and twin operating theaters.

“The transplant”, he pointed out, “aligns with Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s MORE AGENDA, which aims to improve healthcare accessibility in Delta State.

“This success marks a major advancement in organ transplantation for private hospitals in the region, paving the way for more kidney transplants and offering new hope for patients suffering from kidney failure”, he added.
