THE Delta State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Goodluck Oforbruku has summoned an emergency meeting of the State Executive Council meeting scheduled to hold today (Wednesday).
Speaking with Austin Azu of News Central in Asaba, Comrade Oforbruku said “Yes , I have summoned an emergency meeting made up of all the Unions in the Public Service and all the Unions in the Private sector.
By Wednesday (today) we shall sit and look at the directive and the State Executive Council will direct me as appropriate.
“For now, we say no to the new dress code and it is not just me it is the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress, Delta State”.
Still interviewed by the News Central Correspondent in Asaba, Delta State Chairman of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Churchill Oyowe said, “What I see that may be a little bit discriminatory is that some persons are empowered to be more decently dressed like others; like the Legal officers, the Law officers, members of the House of Assembly, the Protocol officers. These cadres of officers have allowances (wardrobe)”.
On his part, a veteran Journalist and former Chairman of NUJ in Delta State, Comrade Osita Biose said, “Let the government include the wardrobe allowance
That is what they do in the banks that is why you find the bankers dressing well as if they are super humans”.
Forner Chairman of ASSU, Delta State University (DELSU) Abraka and former Delta State Commissioner for Education, Professor Patrick Muoboghare, in a separate interview with another Reporter said, “From Lawyers to teachers and even students, the tradition of dress codes has been maintained for decades.
“Even local motor mechanics have their own mode of dressing that identifies them Recall the era of Chief (Dr.) Mrs. Veronica Ogbuagu, a former Commissioner for Education in Delta State. She was a visionary leader who introduced policies that brought discipline and order to the education sector. Some of her policies still reflect in today’s educational system, particularly in schools’ dress standards.
“Doctors have their dress codes, Nurses have theirs and the aviation industry too, Pilots and Flight attendants all follow specific dressing standards.
“As I said, the concept of a dress code for teachers in Delta State was first introduced during Dr. Ogbuagu’s tenure. It made teachers more confident and respectable in their appearance, setting a positive tone for the students they teach.
“Today, you will see our teachers dressing formally. That is the dress code for teachers.
“So, Public Servants, Civil Servants are expected to maintain a standard of dressing that reflects their office and responsibilities.
“If you are going to Ogbogonogo market, dress one way, but if you are in the civil service, dress like someone who represents the government and the people”, he added.
