Delta State governor, Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori, has finally, approved the much-awaited new salary structure for the State Assembly workers.
It came exactly a year after members of the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN) Delta State Branch shut down the State House of Assembly complex over what they described as “failed campaign promises of a new salary structure by the State governor, Sheriff Oborevwori”.
The workers during that sustained protest halted all activities within the Assembly, barricaded the entrance gates while expressing disappointment regarding the lingering non payment for the Consolidated Legislative Salary Structure (CONLESS).
However, respite came on Wednesday (yesterday) when the governor visited the State Assembly to deliver the State of the State address before the Lawmakers.
His words, “I consider myself fortunate to work with a legislature that is genuinely committed to partnering with the Executive to achieve its goals. The relationship between this House and my office has been marked by trust, mutual understanding, transparency and accountability.
“At this point, I would like to briefly address the issue of the Consolidated Legislative Salary Structure (CONLESS). As a former Speaker, I support the new salary scale. However, due to the introduction of a new minimum wage, this administration needed to conduct due diligence before making a decision.
“I am pleased to announce that I have approved the payment of CONLESS, effective June 2025. I thank the workers and their leaders for their patience, understanding and support”.
