Come July 1, any motorist in Delta State found eating or carrying a baby while driving risks six months jail term without option of fine – DESTMA

By Austin Ogwuda

Hard time awaits motorists plying the roads within Delta State involved in recklessness while driving including those who are in the habit of carrying toddlers with one hand and using the other to control the steering and those who fight their officers on duty.

Also to be affected are motorists fond of eating and at the same time driving in addition to other numerous offences like making or receiving phone calls while driving, failure to strap the seat belts, parking on the road to pick passengers, overspending, reckless driving, etc.

Delta State Traffic Management Authority (DESTMA) in a sensitisation jingle laced in pidgin English reeled out these offences and how prepared they are to arrest, arraign defaulters before mobile courts, effective July 1, 2025.

In a related development,  the Delta Waste Management Board in collaboration with Association of Waste Managers (PSPs), Asaba chapter urged Deltans to cultivate good habit by keeping their environment clean to avoid any form of pollution.

They made the call during a sensitization exercise held in Asaba to commemorate World Environment Day, celebrated on June 5 annually.

The Chairman of the Delta State waste Management Board, Hon. Mofe Edema represented by the Director of Operations, Mr Michael Esegba emphasised the need to end plastic pollution, by people learning how to recycle plastic waste for other purposes.

“To end plastic pollution, we must do the following things; reduce how you generate plastic waste by recycling your plastic for other purposes thereby reducing plastic pollution.

“Secondly, get registered with approved PSP for proper collection and disposal of waste. Do not give your waste to cart pushers. When we pollute our environment, we put ourselves in danger.

“At Delta state waste management board, we are committed to ending environmental pollution and we must also know that everyone should be committed to the business of keeping our environment clean”,  he stated.
