THE burial of one Hon. (Mrs) Virginia Nnenna Onyeka nee Okafor, Ph.D,  aged 57, scheduled to hold last weekend at Ibite Okpatu community in Udi local government area of Enugu State, Nigeria was abruptly disrupted following the abduction of the only daughter of the deceased woman while on the way to the mortuary to claim the corpse for burial.

Information reaching The Townhall said the deceased was a Lecturer but no details about the institution, while the name of the kidnapped daughter was not immediately ascertained.

Reports said that as a result of the abduction,  the burial did no longer hold which kept a lot of guests who had already arrived to witness the burial bewildered.

They left the venue abandoning the food and drinks already made available for entertainment.

Community leaders in Udi have condemned the act, describing it as an “abomination” , noting that that insecurity in the region has reached intolerable level.

According to one of the elders who craved for anonymity, “To snatch a child on her way to bury her mother is beyond evil”, he lamented.

Reports said that as at Monday (July 21, 2025) the abductors were yet to contact the family or any ransom demanded. Enugu State police command was also yet to comment over the incident.
