Speaker Martin Amaewhule is the legitimate Rivers State House of Assembly, Appeal Court declares

By Austin Ogwuda

Confusion in Rivers State, Nigeria as the Court of Appeal Abuja Division has nullified the expulsion of Martin Amaewhule and 24 others from the Rivers State House of Assembly by the Rivers State High Court.

The Court while dismissing the ex parte order given by the Rivers State High Court, in Port Harcourt, on May 10, 2024 stopping Martin Amaewhule from parading himself as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, upheld the appeal filed by a factional Speaker of the River State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule and 24 others against the Speaker, Victor Oko-Jumbo and two others.

The three-man panel led by Justice Jimi Olukayode-Bada also dismissed the verdict of the Rivers State High Court stopping 24 other members of the Assembly from accessing the complex or carrying out any such legislative assignment in the name of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

The question now is what is going to be the next line of action with this reprieve obtained by Amaewhule-led Assembly, loyal to Nyesome Wike towards their earlier conceived impeachment of the governor.

What’s the fate of the three-man House of Assembly loyal to Governor Fubara for now until further judicial pronouncement from a higher court.
