Lead Activist/President, Young Nigerian Rights Organization (YNRO), Comrade Victor Ojei (Wong Box Nigeria) says he is filing a legal action against the Delta State Police Command for illegally confiscating over 500 motorcycles from the homes of the owners at Ibusa, Delta State, Nigeria.
According to him, Police Officers under the leadership of the then Delta Commissioner of Police Olufemi Abaniwonda allegedly invaded private residences of the Hausa/Fulani (Northern Nigeria) ethnicity in Ibusa, Oshimili North LGA, Delta State, and confiscated motorcycles that were:
• Inside private compounds,
Not being used on public roads,
• Supported by valid purchase receipts and licensing documents.
*That these motorcycles were reportedly impounded and later sold without:
• Any known court-issued interim forfeiture order, final Forfeiture order or an opportunity to appeal their motorcycles property’s at the court as required by due process of Nigeria laws.
“Given the prolonged silence of relevant institutions”, he went on, “YNRO is now preparing to approach the Federal High Court for:
• Enforcement of fundamental rights under Section 46 of the Constitution,
• Declaratory reliefs,
• Restitution and damages on behalf of affected victims.
“We take this step reluctantly but firmly, as justice delayed must not become justice permanently denied.
“Finally, this matter is not about personality, ethnicity, or vendetta. It concerns:
• The rule of law,
• Protection of property rights,
• Accountability in public service,
• Equal treatment of all Nigerians before the law”.
This was contained in a petition addressed to the Inspector General of Police and copies sent to the Chairman, Police Service Commission; Director-General, Department of State Services (DSS); Chairman, Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC); The Executive Chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Attorney-General of the Federation.
When The Townhall Ng contacted the Delta State Police Command’s Spokesman Bright Edafe, for reaction, he didn’t respond as at the time of this report.
