BARELY five months after Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State vowed to drop Commissioners who are performing below standard within his cabinet, he is yet to match his words with action.
Recall that the governor had on the 2nd of June this year during the commissioning of Commissioners’ Quarters threatened to weed out layabout Commissioners.
Said he,
“You know there are a lot of rumours saying the Governor wants to dissolve the Exco. These people haven’t even heard from me; this just shows that people like too much talk.
“If you (Commissioner) are not performing, we will drop you, and that will not affect other people. If you are performing, you will stay. Like now, two or three people are not performing. I told one of them today at the chapel, you are not doing well.
“As a commissioner, we don’t see you. You talk, carry your memo, and look for the Governor, because the Governor will not come looking for you. There are others who are seeking me out; you have to bring energy and initiative into your ministry.
“If there is a problem in any ministry, hold the commissioner responsible. Any ministry that is doing very well shows that the commissioner is doing very well”, he stated.
The Townhall on Monday night got a call from a former Commissioner during former Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan asking a rhetorical question.
According to him, “I thought I read sometime ago that the governor said he was going to reshuffle his cabinet to send out Commissioners not meeting up to expectations.
“I am calling because I am just reading how he is hitting hard on lazy contractors over poor performance, why are lazy Commissioners still left?”, he asked.
This Reporter’s response was: “Please give me time, let me ask the Spokespersons (Charles Aniagwu and Festus Ahon) including Fred Latimore Oghenesivbe.
The governor had on Monday during the thanksgiving service marking the 2025/2026 Legal Year for the Delta State Judiciary, which took place at Emmanuel the Saviour Catholic Church in Asaba, stated:
“We have put an end to the inconsistent practice of raising contract sums and making modifications after contracts have been finalized.
“Currently, every state contract includes a provision that prohibits these kinds of changes, and no contractor is compensated without a properly executed agreement. This reform is a significant advancement towards transparency and responsible fiscal management, in accordance with the Delta State Public Procurement Law of 2020”.
