The role of journalism is rooted in professionalism, with a focus on interpretative and investigative reporting. These core practices ensure that messages are accurately delivered, clearly understood, and appropriately interpreted by the audience. Central to this is the foundational journalistic principle of the “5Ws and H” (Who, What, Where, When, Why, and How), a critical tool in crafting and analyzing news. Unfortunately, recent events surrounding Delta State’s Chief Press Secretary (CPS), Sir Festus Ahon, reveal a deviation from these standards by some in the media.
Recent reports by a group known as the New Delta Coalition (NDC) accused the CPS of misrepresenting a Christmas message from Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, the immediate past Deputy President of the Nigerian Senate. The NDC alleged that Ahon, acting under the pseudonym “Alaowei Okoronwanta,” distorted Omo-Agege’s message. Such allegations, however, lack substantiation and seem designed to undermine the CPS’s professional integrity.
The credibility of Sir Festus Ahon, a seasoned journalist and spokesperson for Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, stands resilient against these baseless claims. The accusations by the NDC not only misrepresent the CPS but also disregard his established reputation in media practice.
It is critical to ask who comprises the NDC and whether they are equipped to make such weighty allegations without clear evidence.
Furthermore, Governor Oborevwori’s consistent support for President Bola Tinubu’s administration has also been misinterpreted by the NDC. The governor’s backing for Tinubu’s policies and his “Renewed Hope” vision stems from his commitment to national unity, progress, and governance beyond party lines. Oborevwori’s actions reflect his democratic ideals and his aspiration for a better Nigeria.
Under Governor Oborevwori’s leadership, Delta State has witnessed significant progress in areas such as infrastructure development, youth empowerment, and human capital investment. Projects like the Warri flyovers, road construction, and initiatives supporting small and medium-sized enterprises underscore his commitment to improving the lives of Deltans. These achievements are a testament to his inclusive and visionary governance.
The New Delta Coalition is urged to focus on constructive dialogue and refrain from disseminating misleading information. Instead, they should support initiatives aimed at fostering growth and unity in Delta State under Governor Oborevwori’s administration. Constructive criticism and collaboration remain essential for driving progress, but baseless allegations only distract from meaningful development efforts.
In generic terms, professionalism in media reporting must be upheld to preserve the integrity of public discourse. Delta State’s leadership deserves recognition for its strides in governance, and its representatives, like Sir Festus Ahon, should not be subjected to unwarranted attacks.
